Happy International Day of the Midwife
Today, on the International Day of the Midwife, we celebrate the life-saving work and compassionate care of midwives around the world.
Midwives are essential to achieving universal health coverage, reducing maternal and newborn mortality, and advancing health equity.
They provide respectful, people-centred care, often in the most challenging settings.
WHO stands with midwives — investing in their education, leadership, and decent working conditions is not only right, it is critical for healthier futures.
Thank you, midwives, for your commitment, courage, and care.

Every two minutes, a woman dies due to pregnancy or childbirth complications. Most of these deaths are preventable.
Midwives are not only essential during times of stability but are absolutely critical in every crisis, whether in conflict zones, disaster-affected areas, or fragile health systems.
Evidence shows that midwifery models of care are among the most cost-effective interventions to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes.
In every crisis, midwives provide compassion, care, and continuity. And in every setting, they deserve to be valued, supported, and celebrated.
